Text to group
Many e-txt customers have been using the new ‘text to group’ function in e-txt web.
This feature allows you to send messages from e-txt web by texting the e-txt system from your mobile phone! Depending on the content of the message or sender, your message can be automatically forwarded to a whole e-txt group and any replies will also be routed to all the original recipients. This feature helps groups of contacts stay in touch with the same messages, avoiding confusion over conflicting information.
This system is great for all kinds of organisations that require communications within a designated group such as departments, area based contacts or even school years/classes. It is a highly effective way of ensuring that people get your message instantly, unlike an email.
Here’s how it works:
1. Create a new group on e-txt web 2. You can set up as many different groups as you need with different names. 3. You set up a rule on e-txt web that says that if an inbound message matches a certain criteria, i.e. starts with a specific word, it will get forwarded to this group. 4. Someone texts in to the dedicated number attached to your e-txt. Their message matches the criteria specified in the rule. 5. The message is automatically forwarded to the relevant group of people. 6. The sender of the message will receive a text to confirm the message was forwarded and how many people received the message. 7. The members of the group can reply back, either to the sender, or to the whole group. N.B. Please note this functionality is only available in e-txt web. |
Mobile messaging defies credit crunch
Despite the economic downturn mobile messaging rates continue to grow. A report from ABI Research revealed that mobile messaging services revenues will grow from $151 billion this year to more than $212 billion globally by 2013.
The ARPU’s (Average revenues per user) of mobile messaging equal 85% of the revenues for handset data services, regardless of region. This means that all mobile messaging suppliers will work cooperatively to serve customers and will propel the whole supply chain through the economic crisis.
The report also supports the concept that consumers look more favorably on mobile messaging as opposed to voice services. An increasing number of consumers believe mobile messaging is a more effective and efficient way of communication.

Boy saved by text message
|
David Nott, a British Doctor volunteering in DR Congo performed a life-saving operation on a 16 year old boy following instructions from a text message! The boy had been caught in crossfire between government and rebel forces. His arm had been torn off leaving only 6cm behind which had become badly infected and gangrenous. Nott was working 24 hour shifts with the medical charity Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Rutshuru. He said, “He was dying. He had about two or three days to live when I saw him." Nott had never performed the amputation before and so had to follow instructions from his colleague, Professor Meirion Thomas from London’s Royal Marsden Hospital. He said, "I texted him and he texted back step by step instructions on how to do it. Even then I had to think long and hard about whether it was right to leave a young boy with only one arm in the middle of this fighting. But in the end he would have died without it so I took a deep breath and followed the instructions to the letter." Nott knew he needed to perform a forequarter amputation, requiring removal of the collar bone and shoulder blade. The procedure is only performed about 10 times a year in the UK and requires an intensive-care unit. A lot of blood is usually lost and Mr Nott had just one pint of blood and an elementary operating theatre. But the operation was a success and the 16 year old made a full recovery. "It was touch and go whether he would make it so when I saw his face on the MSF website afterwards, it was a real delight," he added. | |

Power of mobile in the US election
Vice-President of product marketing at Airwide Solutions, Chris Lennartz, strongly believes that mobile campaigning provides an efficient and cost-effective solution in comparison to traditional campaigning methods.
The 2008 US election was a truly historical moment, demonstrating an innovation in campaigning through wireless technology, especially mobile messaging.
The impact of technology on the 2008 election saw mobile communication play a significant role in campaigning, and voting activities. This has transformed mobile messaging by setting new standards for SMS use in everyday citizens and political figures.
For example with a cost of US $1.26 per voter, mobile campaigning is by far more cost-effective than traditional campaigning methods such as automated calls and door-to-door canvassing with typical costs between US $20 – US £30 per voter.
A study by Princeton and Michigan Universities found that SMS text messaging reminders to previous non-voters increased the likelihood of each individual voting by 5 percentage points.

NFC Mobile payments in 2009
The GSMA is pushing the mobile industry, especially handset manufacturers to produce handsets that will bring us closer to the age of NFC mobile payments.
NFC payments allow users to make payments via their mobile phone by placing the handset close to an NFC reader. Your phone effectively acts as a credit or debit card by linking to your bank account. The GSMA want handsets with this type of capability to be made available by the middle of 2009.
Michael O’Hara, CMO of the GSMA, stated that by signing up to the ‘Pay-Buy-Mobile’ approach, handset makers would avoid fragmenting the market and, by providing such a beneficial service, will boost sales of handsets when sales are looking dismal.
Issues over security and control have so far prevented the production of NFC handsets. Concerns over how far to allow mobile operators to control the secure element of the payment process have resulted in ongoing discussions between members of the supply chain.
Michael O’Hara is calling for unity within the chain, “This industry has consistently seen the benefits of a common approach, and we believe you don’t get anywhere without it. What we are saying is, we have the specs done, the trial results are done, the results are positive. Yes, there is a supply chain there, but let’s get going and get handsets in shape for next year.”

Mobile advertising on the up!
Limbo and GfK released their latest Mobile Advertising Report earlier this month, revealing that, for the third-quarter, mobile advertising awareness has grown 33.2 % in the last 6 months. Meanwhile, cell phone usage grew approximately at about 5.9 %, suggesting that more financial funds are being allocated to mobile advertising strategies.
Rob Lawson, chief marketing officer and co-founder of Limbo commented that In the third quarter of the year, around 39.1% of mobile phone users (approximately 104 million people) remembered advertising of some format on their phone.
“Once you’re past 100 million, it’s a milestone for the industry,” Lawson said.
In terms of the profiles of recipients, mobile penetration is highest for younger age groups. Approximately 51.9 % of those who recalled seeing mobile ads were aged 34 to 65, and 28.1 % were 49 and older. Only 42.9 % were under the ago of 34.The most commonly recalled advertisements are those in the form of SMS text messages.
The awareness of mobile internet advertising only reached around 50 % of the levels achieved by text messaging.
These figures are incredibly promising in financially difficult times such as these. Advertising efforts have switched from a brand focus to response-based media which is why SMS text messaging continues to provide effective communication methods. Mobile communication is seen as a direct route to consumers.
